What are the best public golf courses in North Carolina?

I’m planning a golf trip to North Carolina and would love some recommendations on the best public courses to play. I’ve heard great things about some courses but I’m looking for more detailed insights. Here are a few questions I have:

  • Which public courses have the best ratings?
  • Are there any hidden gems that aren’t as well known but are worth checking out?
  • What’s the typical cost for a round at these courses?
  • Recommendations on those with beautiful scenery or unique challenges?

Looking forward to hearing your experiences and suggestions!

I think Pinehurst No. 2 is a must-play for anyone in North Carolina! It has such a rich history and the greens are challenging but fair. Definitely one of the highest-rated public courses.

I’ve heard great things about Pinehurst! What makes it stand out compared to other courses?

The golf course at Hilton Head in North Carolina is another great option. The scenery is just beautiful, and the layout is very fun for all skill levels. Highly recommend!

I’ll second the Hilton Head recommendation. I played there last summer and fell in love with the design. Plus, who doesn’t love a beachside view while playing?

In my experience, the best public course rankings often focus on course conditioning and amenities. Did you consider TPC Wakefield Plantation? It’s well-rated for those reasons.

I haven’t played there yet, but it’s on my list! What can you tell us about the pricing?

I believe TPC Wakefield offers great deals, especially in the offseason. I’ve played there multiple times, and the staff is friendly too!

For a more relaxed vibe, check out the Donald Ross course at the Country Club of Asheville. The course is relatively easy but has undulating greens.

I love the rolling hills there! Is it usually crowded, though?

It can get busy on weekends, but if you play early, you’ll have a great experience. I enjoyed the atmosphere immensely!

I always recommend the Knollwood Fairways in West Charlotte. It’s reasonably priced and offers a fun layout. You’re bound to have a good time with friends there.

Knollwood is indeed fun! Do they have any special events coming up?

Yes, they often host community tournaments! It’s worth checking their website for schedules. You might get a chance to win some cool prizes.

I’ve played several courses in NC, and nothing beats the scenery at Cedar Creek Golf Club! Just watch out for the water hazards - they can be sneaky!

Ah, water hazards! Always the nemesis of golfers! I’m intrigued now, what’s the best time to play?

One of the best public courses in North Carolina is Pinehurst No. 2. It’s renowned for its challenging layout and historical significance as the host of numerous major championships.

Absolutely agree! The greens there are famously difficult, but the experience is unforgettable, especially the scenic views.

If you’re looking for a unique experience, check out Tanglewood Park. The rolling hills and beautiful landscapes make for a scenic round of golf.

I’ve played there too! The courses are well-maintained and it’s a perfect spot for a leisurely day out.
