When it comes to golf, most of us think about pristine fairways, carefully manicured greens, and the sound of a well-hit ball echoing through the air. But there’s a whole world of golf courses that defy these conventions and take the game to outrageous and bizarre heights! I wanted to start a discussion about some of the craziest golf courses out there!
The Most Unusual Golf Courses Around the World
Here are a few that have caught my eye:
The Old Course at St Andrews, Scotland: Known as the “Home of Golf,” it’s not crazy in design but has been played since the 1400s. When you think of history, this is the place!
The Legend Course at The Resort at Glade Springs, West Virginia: This course has a hole (the 16th) that is over 300 yards long and requires you to hit over a river. Talk about a challenge!
Golf in a Volcano - Lava Fields Course, Iceland: Imagine teeing off with lava rock as your backdrop and the sound of geysers in the distance! It’s both beautiful and surreal.
More Whacky Examples
The Slope Course, Idaho: A course literally carved from the mountainside, featuring dramatic elevation changes and stunning views.
Floating Golf Course, Norway: A floating course that’s just off the coast of the stunning Norwegian fjords.
Le Golf National, France: Site of the 2018 Ryder Cup, it has dramatic water hazards and is known for its challenging layout.

I’d love to hear if any of you have played on any of these courses, or if there are others that you think are even crazier! What unique features did they have? Let’s share our experiences and maybe plan some golf adventures together!
One of the craziest courses I’ve played is the Pebble Beach in California. The breathtaking views and cliffside holes make it unique, but the weather can be a real challenge!
I’ve heard amazing things about Pebble Beach! I played at the Ghost Creek Golf Course in Oregon. It’s built into an old volcanic crater, and the elevation changes are wild!
I loved my time at Topgolf, but not super crazy. I did try the mini-golf on the island of Kauai, which has holes that go through waterfalls - super fun!
Mini-golf through waterfalls sounds awesome, @anthonypage! Ever tried the Black Mountain Golf Club in Thailand? The course offers views of the mountains while you play.
Just came back from the Old Course in St. Andrews and I must say that the experience is second to none. The ambiance is rich with history, though I found the bunkers deceptively challenging.
Hello everyone! I would recommend the Maroon Creek Club in Colorado. It’s stunning with its mountain views and unique layout. Anyone else played there?
I played Maroon Creek a few months ago, @xmontgomery. The ninth hole is particularly gorgeous. Did you try the local cuisine at the clubhouse afterwards? Totally worth it!
I think the craziest course I’ve ever seen is the one with the live goats in Petra, Jordan! Can you imagine trying to putt with goats roaming around? Pretty distracting!
One of the craziest courses I’ve played is the TPC Sawgrass. The 17th hole, with its island green, is both beautiful and intimidating. The design truly tests your nerves!
I played a crazy course in the Scottish Highlands that had numerous blind shots and unpredictable wind. The architecture felt almost part of the landscape, naturally sculpted by the elements.
