Best public golf courses in Maine?

Hey fellow golf enthusiasts! I’m planning a golf trip to Maine this summer and I’m looking for some advice on the best public golf courses to check out. I’ve heard the courses in Maine are absolutely stunning, but I’m not sure which ones are the true hidden gems.

I’m particularly interested in courses that offer beautiful scenery, challenging but fair layouts, and a good value for the money. I’m an avid golfer with a mid-to-high handicap, so I’d love to find a mix of courses that will test my skills but still be enjoyable to play.

Do you have any must-play public courses in Maine that you’d recommend? What makes them stand out? I’m open to any and all suggestions to help me plan the perfect Maine golf getaway. Thanks in advance for your help!

Sebasco Harbor Resort in Phippsburg has a great public golf course with stunning views of the Kennebec River. The course is well-maintained and offers a challenging but enjoyable experience for all skill levels.

For a more affordable public option, I’d recommend Riverside Golf Course in Portland. It’s not as fancy as Sebasco, but the conditions are still great, and the pace of play is usually pretty quick.

Has anyone played Boothbay Harbor Golf Club? I’ve heard it’s a hidden gem with beautiful ocean views.

Yes, I’ve played Boothbay a few times, and it’s definitely a hidden gem! The ocean views are stunning, and the course layout is really interesting. The greens can be a bit tricky, but it’s a great challenge.

I’ve heard nothing but good things about Prouts Neck Country Club in Scarborough. Anyone have experience playing there?

Wow, Sebasco, Riverside, and Boothbay all sound like fantastic options! I’m planning a golf trip to Maine this summer and will have to check out a few of these courses. Any other hidden gems I should add to the list?

Wow, you all are really selling me on the golf in Maine! I was thinking of heading to the Carolinas, but now I’m reconsidering. This is super helpful, thanks everyone!

Hmm, one course that might be worth considering is Sunday River Golf Club in Newry. It’s a bit further north, but the views of the mountains are simply stunning.

Haha, I don’t know about you all, but I’m just hoping the mosquitoes in Maine aren’t as bad as the rumors say. Nothing ruins a round of golf like getting eaten alive!

Hey, as long as you pack some strong bug spray, you should be good to go! The courses are worth braving a few mosquitoes, in my opinion.

This has been a really helpful discussion! I’m definitely adding a few of these Maine courses to my bucket list. The only thing I’d add is to make sure you check course conditions and any COVID-19 restrictions before booking your tee times.

Willowdale is a really nice public course with well-kept greens and fairways. The green fees are very reasonable, especially for the quality of the course.

I personally prefer Falmouth Country Club. It’s a bit more expensive than some other public courses, but the layout is challenging and the conditions are excellent.

Has anyone played at Riverside Golf Course in Portland? I heard they have really reasonable rates and it’s a fun, accessible course.

Riverside is a great option for budget-minded golfers. The green fees are very affordable, and the course is well-maintained and enjoyable to play.

I’m not a fan of Natanis. The courses are pretty basic and can get crowded. I’d rather pay a little more and play at a nicer public course like Biddeford-Saco Country Club.

Hmm, I’ve heard good things about Martindale Country Club in Auburn. Might be worth checking out if you’re looking for a scenic, well-maintained public course.

Looks like Maine has a ton of great public golf options that won’t break the bank. Time to start planning that golf trip!

The best time to play public golf courses in Maine is from May to October, when the weather is generally mild and the courses are in great condition. Summer months can get crowded, so try to play in the spring or fall for a more enjoyable experience.
