Top Public Golf Courses in Chicago - Any Recommendations?

I’m planning to hit the links in Chicago soon and I’m on the hunt for the top public golf courses in the area. If you’ve played at any great courses, I’d love to hear your recommendations!

Here are some things I’m particularly interested in:

  • Course condition: How well-maintained are the greens and fairways?
  • Difficulty level: Are there courses that cater to different skill levels?
  • Amenities: What kind of facilities do the courses offer (e.g., clubhouses, practice areas)?
  • Pricing: Are there courses that provide good value for the cost?

If you have any recent experiences or even a list of “must-play” courses, it would be super helpful! Thanks in advance for your insights.

I’m also looking for beginner-friendly courses! I had a great experience at Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course. It’s got a nice layout for newcomers.

Sydney R. Marovitz is a solid choice! If you’re near the lake, you should also check out Wilmette Golf Club. It’s very welcoming to beginners.

I agree with both! The layout at Marovitz is really forgiving. For a more extensive option, don’t miss the 18-hole course at Forest Preserve Golf Course. Great for new golfers!

I’ve heard mixed reviews about Forest Preserve. Some say it’s too basic and lacks variety. Anyone else feel that way?

That’s a fair point, but for beginners, it’s all about getting comfortable. The simpler layouts really help with that!

Welcome to golf! You could also check out the Chicago Park District courses. They have a lot of beginner-friendly options and beautiful scenery!

Thanks, Pamela! Are there any specific Chicago Park District courses you’d recommend? I’m clueless when it comes to choosing one.

Definitely try out Jackson Park Golf Course. It’s pretty forgiving for newcomers, and the staff are super friendly!

Great tip, David! I’ve also heard that Marquette Park is nice; it’s more spacious, too! Anyone played there?

I played at Marquette last year! The fairways are wide and the pace is relaxed, good for beginners.

I’d add that some courses can be crowded, so plan to go early! Nothing worse than waiting on every hole when you’re starting out.

So true! I had my first game at a crowded course and felt so pressured. It’s really about enjoying the experience, right?

Absolutely! Golf should be fun. Don’t forget to bring snacks; they make the round way more enjoyable! What’s your go-to on the course?

Ha, good point! I usually go for trail mix. Keeps my energy up while I’m trying not to slice the ball!

One of the best public courses in Chicago is Harborside International Golf Center. It’s challenging and has hosted several tournaments. The views are great too!

Absolutely agree! Harborside is tough but rewarding. Don’t miss the new clubhouse amenities—they’re excellent!

If you’re looking for competitive play, don’t overlook the Cog Hill Golf & Country Club. Their Dubsdread course is known for its difficulty and has hosted some serious tournaments.

Great point, Larry! Cog Hill is a staple for serious golfers. Just be prepared for some challenging holes!

What about the Glenwoodie Golf Club? It’s got a friendly vibe and offers a solid challenge while being very affordable. Anyone played there recently?
